Physical Education (PE)
Intent
Our Physical Education (P.E.) curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of movement, sport, and wellbeing. It not only focuses on improving physical skills such as coordination, strength, flexibility, and endurance, but also nurtures teamwork, resilience, decision-making, and leadership. Through Beyond the Physical, pupils are encouraged to build confidence in their abilities, reflect on their progress, and understand the importance of an active lifestyle. We promote inclusivity so that every pupil, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to succeed and enjoy physical activity. To enhance opportunities further, we offer a wide range of clubs, enrichment activities, matches, and tournaments, as well as access to sports and experiences that pupils may not otherwise encounter outside school.
Implementation
At Manor Leas, we use the Beyond the Physical scheme to deliver a High-Quality PE curriculum that does more than teach sports—it builds lifelong physical literacy and nurtures all aspects of each child’s development.
This mastery-based, research-informed programme guides pupils through progressive units of work that cover the full breadth of the National Curriculum: from games, dance, and gymnastics to outdoor adventure and movement fundamentals. Rather than focusing only on technique or competitive sport, Beyond the Physical emphasises:
-
Developing foundational movement skills such as coordination, balance, agility and spatial awareness, so every pupil can participate confidently.
-
Ensuring lessons are inclusive, engaging, and tailored, with opportunities for challenge, support, and different starting points depending on each child’s abilities.
-
Making pupils the centre of their own learning—helping them reflect, make decisions, collaborate with others, and see themselves improve over time.
-
Encouraging not just the physical domain, but also the cognitive and social elements: learning new ideas, teamwork, resilience, decision making and self-confidence.
Pupils become masterful movers, skilful solvers, and confident connectors.
Also pupils access:
- Outdoor and Adventurous Activities: Pupils participate in problem-solving and collaborative challenges, often during outdoor learning or residential trips.
- Fitness and Health Education: Pupils learn about the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, and mental well-being, integrated into lessons and school-wide initiatives.
- Swimming: Pupils access their swimming lessons through Pools to Schools - a pop-up onsite swimming pool.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in confident, motivated, and resilient pupils who enjoy being active and understand the value of leading healthy lives. Through our curriculum, children develop strong movement skills alongside teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership qualities. By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils are equipped not only with the physical ability to participate in a wide range of sports and activities, but also with the social and emotional skills that prepare them for lifelong learning, wellbeing, and active participation in their community.
